Here’s a cool article from a local IT professional, who coincidentally happens to be writing for the newspaper I used to work for. It’s a look at how the writer, MJ Shoer, anticipates the future.
So are hover cars around the corner? No, but there is a coming change thanks to a change of the guard, a subtle shift as baby boomers retire and y0unger generations begin to take over the workplace. These are generations used to telecommuting, to having remote access to their workplaces and working odd hours:
As the baby boomer generation begins to age out of the work force and the younger generations begin to move in, they will demand technology adoption at an unprecedented rate. The generation that has been raised on smartphones and tablets will demand that these devices be supported in the workplace. They will expect to work in a paperless environment and one that is up 24/7, allowing them to work whenever and wherever they wish.
It’s probably time to start thinking about how your own workplace might change. Perhaps your small business will not become a home to a 24/7 model with remote access. Perhaps you need employees on-site. But technology will allow your workers to get stuff done from home when they’re sick, check in on marketing and sales efforts via mobile phones and organizing online conferences from far-flung places.
If you can get more productivity out of your workers by adapting new technology, or reach customers more easily, it’s well worth the effort. Don’t be left behind by the changing world.
