The Business Of The Super Bowl

Small Business Lessons From The Super Bowl

The Super Bowl has come and gone, ending with a 21-17 New York Giants victory.

We’ve got a lot of unhappy Patriots fans up this way post-Super Bowl, as you might imagine, so I’m not going to spend much time dwelling on the game itself. Too much salt in too big a wound at this point.

I thought you might be interested in a brief rundown of the some of the business aspects of the Super Bowl, as well as a look at the infamous slate of commercials. Let’s do it.

The List

  • The Super Bowl is a huge day for small businesses that are related in any way, shape or form to the game. Grocery stores in my area were cleaned out on Sunday, and NFL merchandisers rake in cash leading up to the Super Bowl, too. It was even bigger in Indianapolis, where the Super Bowl was held this year.
  • Small businesses can learn a lot from Super Bowl ads, including clever marketing techniques and what to absolutely not do to draw in customers.
  • Those ads were pretty lackluster in 2012, both according to me and popular opinion. I’m not sure why companies feel the need to re-use the same old tropes. When you’re using millions of dollars of your advertising budget on one spot, you have to deliver big-time value. The same thing is true even if you’re spending virtually nothing on your advertising and marketing efforts, though, and these ads can teach your biz a valuable lesson or two.
