work and life balance

Small business owners are constantly struggling to find the perfect balance between work and family life.  It’s not easy to walk that fine line.  But it’s just as important to your small business’s success as it is to your personal life to ensure that you don’t burn out.

Here are some tips for restoring and keeping that delicate balance:

Shut off.  When you’re not in the office, really disconnect.  It may be tempting to keep your iPhone on all night and continue answering emails while you’re at your daughter’s soccer practice.  With no real separation between work and home, your body and mind is never really winding down.  Allow yourself to recharge before you’re back at it again in the morning.

Set specific hours.  Before you go into the office, set a deadline for yourself to finish up and stick to it.  Knowing you have to finish by a specific time will force you to work more efficiently during the day.  It doesn’t necessarily matter what your hours are, as one of the many benefits of owning a small business is the flexibility. The important thing here is that you have a clear stopping point.

Find a hobby.  Most small business owners are small business owners because they are passionate about what they do.  It’s tempting to allow your business to consume your life when you love what you’re doing.  That’s also an easy way to burn yourself out.  Finding a hobby, something you enjoy yet is unrelated to your business is a great way to recharge.

It’s often difficult to flip that switch from your work life to your personal life.  But, shutting off and recharging from time to time is the key to maintaining balance.

How do you recharge?
